Professor Taiwo Lateef Sheikh is a distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry, Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria. A Fellow and Chief Examiner at the West African College of Physicians, an International Faculty Member at Harvard Medical School Faculty of Global Mental Health and External Examiner at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. He contributed to mental health policy and legislative reforms in Nigeria and across Africa through development of Nigeria’s Mental Health Policies (2013 and 2023), the National Suicide Prevention Framework (2023), National Mental Health Act (2021), Africa CDC strategic plan for NCDs, Injuries & mental health, mental health strategic plan for ECOWAS and many others. He is the founder and President of Nigeria Biological Psychiatry Society, convener of the Nigeria Suicide Prevention Advocacy Working Group, a member of Africa CDC High-Level Advisory Committee on NCDs, Mental Health, and Injuries and the Principal Investigator for Nigeria in multi-country research on genetics of depression in Africa. He has led and co-led research work in various aspects of mental health, and has authored many peer-reviewed publications, presented at scientific conferences, and published widely in national and international media.
