Aggrey Gisiora Mokaya, PhD, is a postdoctoral fellow with the Sub-Saharan African Network for TB/HIV Research Excellence (SANTHE) at the Africa Health Research Institute. He is a social scientist working at the intersection of mental health, substance use, and community engagement in global health research in sub-Saharan Africa. His peer-reviewed research examines depression, suicide risk, alcohol use, bullying victimization and digital mental health interventions among adolescents and young people, as well as behavioural and systems factors influencing health outcomes in low-resource settings.
His scholarship also engages medical anthropology and bioethics. He is the recipient of a Wenner-Gren Foundation grant for Time, Blood and Stories as Gifts, an ethnographic study exploring the moral, temporal, and relational dimensions of participation in HIV research in rural South Africa.
He integrates arts-based participatory methods, including interactive theatre, to centre community voices in mental health and HIV research and strengthen ethical, community-informed research practice.
